The Canal Saint-Martin is a 4.55 km long canal located in Paris. It runs through the 10th and 11th arrondissements. It has many structures including 4 bridges, 5 beautiful iron footbridges and 9 locks to admire having a Parisian afternoon at the Canal.
It was Napoleon who, in 1802, created a network of canals capable of supplying Parisians with drinking water, but also of serving as a river route to transport goods and construction materials to the center of Paris.
Among these artificial watercourses, the Saint-Martin canal began to be dug in 1805 and was completed twenty years later, at the end of 1825 and it is now a place where you can enjoy a Parisian afternoon.
The Canal has been a multiple filming location, it has been immortalized by French cinema, it is here that Amélie Poulain makes her famous ricochets and it is also the location for the film “Hotel du Nord”.
The Canal Saint-Martin is definitely one of my favorite places. I had a Parisian afternoon there on a Friday, the sun shining and the people enjoying the weather. I spent that Parisian afternoon grabbing a coffee and a very classic croissant from one of the Boulangeries around there and sat down on one of the benches facing the canal, where people feed the birds and the iconic swan who lives there.
